Alleys and Avenues Tour

      Alleys & Avenues Garden Tour
Who Knew?
Did You?
Not I,
Not until I spied,
Beyond the garden gate,
Things of beauty meant to elate.

In April of 2003 the Heart of Virginia Master Gardeners partnered with the Town & Country Beautification Council to present the Farmville Spring Home & Garden Tour. For 2004 the Master Gardeners chose to celebrate the lesser-known gardens that lay behind the gates of Farmville’s alleys and avenues. Many people were not aware that Farmville had alleys. Were you?

Many of the gardens are not visible or accessible from the street. A small donation gained entrance to 10 private gardens featuring a wide collection of hostas, daylilies galore, a cottage garden, fountains and urns from the 1800s, and much more.

Unlike traditional spring garden tours these outdoor living spaces were viewed in June and highlighted garden plantings that endure summer months. The weather that day was glorious and because many of the homes were located near to each other, many tour participants reveled in the sunshine walking from house to house.

An annual garden tour serves as one of two main fundraisers for the association. Proceeds enable the Heart of Virginia Master Gardeners to further their mission of assisting and educating residents on horticultural practices.
